Make it count is a four year national project funded by the Department Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and managed by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) as part of the Closing the Gap - expansion of intensive
literacy and numeracy programs
initiative.

At the recent ACER conference in Melbourne we set up a poster display and exhibition stand to raise peoples awareness to the Make it count project and also the Make it count online network.

Culunga Family Maths Day

Culunga Community School in the Swan Valley near Perth recently held a very successful family maths day at the school. And what a day it was! The school is an idependent Aboriginal school that draws students from a wide geographical area. Each day students are picked up by buses and brought to the school. On this particular day - which happened to be the last day of Term 1 - parents, caregivers and other family members also hopped on the bus to go to school. Yolngu turtle egg numbering and Base 5 (and what this taught me about teaching!)

I know that this project is focused on urban Indigenous kids, however I offer this description because, as I'll elaborate in later posts, I believe it has some general relevance when it comes to teaching (and learning from) a subgroup who perhaps does not see the world in quite the same way as our own.
